Religion and belief

Located between two axes of culture from China in the north and and from India in the south, Viet Nam has many religions such as: Bouhdism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Islam....witch are practiced together peacefully with the local religions as: Caodaism, and hoahaoisme and with local beliefs as: Animism, shamanism....

The Catholicism came with the Portuguese missionaries from 1553. This is the St. Joseph Cathedral built in 1893 by the French in Hanoi:

The Caodaism is a religion that mixes Buddhism, Catholicism… This religion is practiced more in the South of Vietnam. This is the sanctuary of Caodaism in Tay Ninh:
 


In each of Viet village, there is a temple, being called: Communal Temple that worships the village creator or historic character of the nation.
Each year, there is the communal feast in the temple after the Lunar New Year. This is the time to commemorate the benefactions of the venerated character in the temple and to play popular games.

Protestantism has been evangelized by American missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century:

The Islamism came with the Arab merchants in the 4th century which is practiced mainly by the Cham ethnic group. This is a mosque in Chau Doc town, near the Cambodian border in South of Vietnam:


The Vietnamese worship their ancestor. Each family has an altar to venerate them, installed with care.
Twice by moth:  In the 15th day and 30th day of the lunar month, they present the offerings: Incense, betel, water, tea, flowers ... to the ancestor on altar.
Upon arrival of the death anniversary of a family member, the descendants have offerings: Rice, meat, incense ...on the altar to celebrate the death date which starts his eternal life.
Family events are also announced to the ancestors: Marriage, examination, birth of children....



Vietnamese people also worship beliefs: The Mothers.
The Mother of Water, The Mother of Sky, Mother of Thunder, the Mother of the Forest, the Mother of Rain, the Mother of Soil .... Who play an important role in the beliefs of the population living in rice culture:

The Hinduism came from India in the 2nd century, practiced by the Cham ethnic minority. This is the brick temple built in 7th century in Nha Trang beach to venerate Shiva Saint.
