Advices during travel in Vietnam

Clothes:

1- The clothing must be correct in places of worship: Pagoda, church, temple...
This is at least a short below the knees, not low-cut t - shirts.

There is no need to travel heavily. You can by some necessary things in Vietnam with cheap price.

Between October and March, when traveling in the north, you need a jacket, a sweater at least.
The lowest temperature in the mountains of the North is 2 degrees while 10 degree in the plain, often in January and February.
In the South, it is always warmer: 30 degrees on average, except in Da Lat - a city at 1500 m altitude.

 Behavior:

1 - With the beggars: This is a business now. This is not because of hunger, in general we beg. In this case, it’s no need to give them money to avoid encouraging begging.
Of course, there are some special cases but very rare. I suggest you give them 10 000 VND (50 cents).

If you have any toys, I suggest you gather them together before giving to children in a class to avoid begging. But in this case, you should see the amount to avoid jealousy.

2 - With the local people: It absolutely must not get nervous with local persons. This is bad seen.
Everything can be arranged if you have any problems. The nervousness, anger are not necessary. In addition, it can cause more harm.
I advise you to be calm and be quiet. Everything can be arranged here.

3 - With the guides and drivers:
It absolutely must not be nervous or speak aloud.
These are the people who serve you directly by making your trip easier and interesting.
The guides are formally trained and certified. They can have different temperaments, visions....
But when they are with you, that mean they love their job. According to their nature, they are all friendly. In many cases, the respect must be reciprocal.
If you do not like to be with them, do not hesitate to ask for change.

Security:
Vietnam is a country where security is one of the best in Asia. But, the pic-pocketing, petty thieves exist in the public places, especially in Ho Chi Minh - City and Ha Noi.
I advise you to keep vigilant in these areas as in big cities throughout the world.

1 - We must let the passports at the reception of the hotel, in the safe box or in your car.
2 - Do not tempt valuables things in street such as: Jewelry, necklaces...
3 - You must bring your cameras with string in hand.
4 - You must try to let your things in your bus or car.
5 - Do not open the wallet in public places in major cities.
6 - Do not stay out late alone in town.
7 - Ask the mobile phone number of your guide for urgent cases.

Prostitution:
It is officially banned but it is known especially in places: Beaches, cities, tourist attractions...
It is advisable to avoid it because of lack of security. There are risks of being robbed, ripped off, punished...
7 years in local prison with pedophilia: Sexual intercourse with minors are prohibited and severely controlled.

Drugs:
This is forbidden and severely punished in Vietnam. The death penalty is applied to traffickers from 100 g of heroin or 6 kg of opium.
It is strongly advised not to be involved in these stories.

Taxi:
The illegal taxis exist. To avoid being cheated by false counters, it is advisable to ask your guide, the hotel, waiters in restaurants ...to call you a taxi. This application is free and satisfied nicely.

Restaurant price:
The food is very cheap in Vietnam. In modern restaurants, the prices are posted.
But in popular restaurants, the food is sold by the number of person.
Do not hesitate to ask the price before being served. If you are more than two people, one must make a common fund to pay for meals.

Foreigners have the habit of paying only what they consume by sharing money. This is avaricious for Vietnamese who don’t have habit to collect money from each customer. This can create errors, misunderstandings ... and more with language barriers.
